what if Stiles' real name happens to be Eric? whAT IF?!

stilesmcalll:

man I have wanted to try to break this name shit down for forever let’s gO

So first, Lydia and Ariel are quite similar in name meaning. Lydia is ‘woman from Lydia’ and Ariel is ‘lion of God’. In the Bible, Lydia was a woman of God who listened to God’s word and put it into action, which is basically like a lion of God.

Eric means ‘one ruler’ and there is a Polish form of it, Eryczek. I think it would be pretty hard to get ‘Stiles’ as a nickname from that, but Eryczek could possibly be his middle name or even the name Stiles is a nickname for could be his middle name because people can have nicknames from their middle names. For instance I have a friend named John Jack (for the sake of privacy I won’t put his last name here), but to everyone he just goes by Jack not John.

Even if Eryczek is not in Stiles’ name at all, his first name could have a similar meaning to Eric like Lydia’s does with Ariel. We don’t know what Stiles’ actual first name is, but I’m guessing its probably either a Polish form of Stanley (Stanislaw), Steven (Szczepek), or Simon (Szymek). Stanley, meaning ‘stone clearing’, seems like the obvious choice especially because it can be shortened to a nickname, Stan, but Stanislaw isn’t that hard to pronounce. In the show Stiles’ name is so complex looking to people that they don’t even try to pronounce it right and just settle for his nickname, which is why I think its more Szczepek or Szymek, because those are much more complicated to pronounce.

Steven means ‘crown’ and the nickname Stiles means ‘steep ascent’, which is sharply rising to the top such as literally or in power. The top of something is sometimes referred to as the crown, like the crown of someone’s head. Both names have to do with power and ruling like Eric’s ‘one ruler’, especially because Steven is one singular crown for a ruler. If any of the first names are going to be closest in meaning to Eric and the nickname Stiles itself, its Steven.

Simon means ‘he has heard (the Word of God)’. In the Bible there were several people named Simon, one who carried the cross for Jesus and another which was an apostle given the alternative name Peter by Jesus. Simon isn’t close to Eric in meaning, but it is close to Lydia’s name since both have to do with hearing the word of God. Peter, interestingly enough, means ‘stone’, kind of like the meaning of Stanley ‘stone clearing’. Not that Stiles is connected to Peter necessarily, but the two characters are kind of similar in personality.

I seriously doubt that Jeff Davis went this far into thinking of names when he was planning this show out, but I don’t know, its fun to guess and look up name meanings. If Stiles’ first name is going to be close to his nickname and Eric’s in meaning like Lydia’s is with Ariel, it would be Szczepek (Steven), and you would have Szczepek (Stiles) Stilinski.

I was always pretty convinced that the nickname Stiles was derived from Stilinski rather than his first name. Though it is never confirmed, Coach does comment in 1x05 that he thought Stiles was his last name, and it makes sense that it would come from Stilinski, as they are quite similar.
In the same episode, Sheriff Stilinski points out Stiles’ first name to Coach, and the camera zeroes in on the name, partially obscured by Sheriff’s finger and the shadow it creates on the file folder (http://i.imgur.com/TiMfL3j.png).

The one sure thing about his name that can be seen is that it ends in the letter m. The rest is extremely blurry, and even when I messed with lighting and cropping none of the other letters became much clearer. I am relatively sure that there is an e (or maybe a), an i, and likely a t in there, but the second to last letter is difficult to work out. It has to be a short letter (in comparison with the t and m, it fits better next to the m), and it’s too thin to be most vowels (as would be expected between two consonants), but there’s no visible dot to make it an i as far as I can tell.
I did a quick search of names ending in eitin, but there are, unfortunately, exactly none.

Another thing mentioned in the parent-teacher conference is that Stiles is named after his maternal grandfather. As such, there is a great possibility that the name is not Polish in origin at all. The only thing we know about the maternal side of Stiles’ family is that his mother’s name is Claudia. Claudia is a Latin name in origin, but is common all over Europe and the Americas, making it very difficult to pin down a place of origin for Stiles’ name.

From the picture though, I do think that in order to fit evenly on the tab of the file folder (assuming the name is centered, though there’s no way to be sure) Stiles’ name is pretty long. Like potentially double the visible letters long. No way to tell for sure, though.

Also, something I just found out googling Stiles’ name is that during an interview Dylan said that we would find out Stiles’ real name in Season 3? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure season 3 has come and gone and we are no closer to discovering his name than we were before it started.
